7 ways to maximise your wedding photography engagement session.
Congratulations on your engagement! This exciting time in your life is not only about planning the perfect wedding but also about capturing your unique story through timeless and heartfelt photographs.

An engagement shoot is a really great way to get to know your photographer and more importantly get to experience what it’s like to be in front of a camera and centre of attention before your wedding day, so that you are able to feel relaxed and comfortable whilst celebrating with your family and guests!
1. Getting to know your photographer!
This session allows us to get to know each other and connect better, ensuring I capture your personalities authentically. The most important aspect of your engagement shoot is to enjoy the experience. It’s natural to feel a bit nervous, especially if you’re not used to being in front of the camera.
Trust me as your photographer to guide you through casual poses and prompts. We’ll start off with some very easy and natural candid walking shots so that you can focus on each other rather than the camera. The more relaxed you are, the more authentic your photos will be. Nothing will feel over-posed with me.. I like to keep things feeling and looking very natural and fun!
2. Pick a Meaningful Location
Consider choosing a location that holds significance for both of you. Whether it’s where you had your first date, a favourite park, or a beautiful beach, it's up to you. Alternatively, you could opt for a stunning backdrop that complements your style, such as an urban landscape or a natural setting. (As your photographer, I’m always happy to travel to a location that means something to you for the engagement shoot, and if it's in a mutually convenient location this is included in the price when you book my full day package!)
3. Plan Your Outfits Wisely
Choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference in your engagement photos. Aim for a cohesive look without being overly matchy. Consider the colours and styles that will complement your chosen location. Layering can add interest, and allows for variety and comfort during changeable weather. And don’t forget to accessorise! - Hats, scarfs, picnic blankets, umbrellas.. be your creative selves!
4. Consider Timing & Lighting
Natural light can work wonders for your photos, so think about scheduling your shoot during times of the day that have interesting light. Early mornings and sunsets provide interesting directional light, and midday sun can allow for nice even light. Although I can’t predict the weather, especially here in the north of England, I’ll be able to suggest suitable locations and times that we can decide on what as and when.
"WE ARE ABSOLUTELY DELIGHTED WITH THE PHOTOS WE RECEIVED AND THE EXPERIENCE OF WORKING WITH ALISTAIR.
HE MADE US FEEL RELAXED THROUGHOUT OUR ENGAGEMENT SHOOT AND REMOVED THE USUAL AWKWARDNESS THAT IS INVOLVED WITH POSING!
WE COULDN'T RECOMMENDED HIM HIGHLY ENOUGH!"

5. Prepare for the Weather
If your shoot is outdoors, be prepared for the weather. If it’s sunny, consider bringing hats for some fun shots. If it’s chilly, layering is key, and you can always snuggle up for warmth! I always bring an umbrella (for the couple) to wedding and engagement shoots, just in case!
TOP TIP: Try to avoid sunglasses, even if it's sunny! - Your photos will feel more special if we can see your eye contact instead of the reflection of me in your sunnies!
6. Practice Makes Perfect
If you’re nervous about being in front of the camera, practice (at home) can help. I'll be there at your engagement shoot to help you feel comfortable and offer suggestions so that you aren't stood there feeling like a lemon!
Once you receive all of the edited images of your pre-wedding shoot, you'll quickly know which ones look and feel natural, so you'll know which ones you could replicate on your wedding day. The more relaxed you are the better, and I'll always do whatever I can to assist, but always in a way that feels relaxed and natural.
Bonus Tip! - 'dress rehearsal'
On the day of your engagement shoot, it’d be a good idea to run through some of the typical moments during the wedding day as a ‘dress rehearsal’.. so you can practice “walking down the aisle”, your first kiss or even a snippet from your first dance with me so that you know what it looks like ahead of time. I find that lots of couples really appreciate doing this on an engagement shoot and helps them feel much more confident on their wedding day knowing that they are going to look fantastic!
7. Get the most out of your photos!
Once your engagement photos are delivered to you, consider how you might want to use them. Whether it’s for save-the-date cards, your wedding invitations, or as decoration at your wedding venue, make sure to showcase the beautiful memories you’ve created.
Final thoughts.
Your engagement photo shoot is a fun and relaxed opportunity to capture the excitement and love that precedes your wedding day. By planning ahead, choosing the right elements, and making sure that we have a good time, you’ll ensure that your engagement photos will be cherished for years to come, along with your full wedding gallery. Enjoy the process and remember, these moments are a celebration of your unique story!
