7 tips & ideas for your wedding photography engagement session.

Congratulations on your engagement! This exciting time in your life is not only about planning the perfect wedding but also about capturing the essence of your love story through beautiful photographs.

An engagement shoot is a really great way to get to know your photographer and more importantly get to experience what it’s like to be in front of a camera and centre of attention before your wedding day, so that you are able to feel relaxed and comfortable whilst celebrating with your family and guests! Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your wedding photography engagement shoot.

Get to know your photographer!

Your engagement shoot is a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera and to build a rapport with your photographer. By the time the engagement shoot comes round, you and I will likely have chatted over the phone or facetime, but this is another chance for us all to get to know each other a little better, which allows be a much better chance of being able to capture your personalities in the phots I take.

The most important aspect of your engagement shoot is to enjoy the experience. It’s natural to feel nervous, especially if you’re not used to being in front of the camera. Trust me as your photographer to guide you through poses and prompts. We’ll start off with some very easy and natural candid walking shots so that you can focus on each other rather than the camera. The more relaxed you are, the more authentic your photos will be.

Pick a Meaningful Location

Consider choosing a location that holds significance for both of you. Whether it’s where you had your first date, a favorite park, or a beautiful beach, the setting can add depth and emotion to your photos. Alternatively, you could opt for a stunning backdrop that complements your style, such as an urban landscape or a natural setting. (As your photographer, I’m always happy to travel to a location that means something to you for the engagement shoot, and this is included in the price when you book my full day package!)

Plan Your Outfits Wisely

Choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference in your engagement photos. Aim for a cohesive look without being overly matchy. Consider the colours and styles that will complement your chosen location. Layering can add interest, and don’t forget to accessorise! Have a dog that you want to include?! Bring it along, especially if it’s going to be at your wedding!

Consider Timing and Lighting

Natural light can work wonders for your photos, so think about scheduling your shoot during the golden hour—shortly after sunrise or just before sunset—to achieve that magical glow. Although I can’t predict the weather, specially here in the north of England, I’ll be able to suggest alternative locations/times and we can decide on what to do as and when. I always bring an umbrella (for the couple) to wedding and engagement shoots, just in case!

Prepare for the Weather

If your shoot is outdoors, be prepared for the weather. If it’s sunny, consider bringing sunglasses or hats for some fun shots. If it’s chilly, layering is key, and you can always snuggle up for warmth!

Practice Makes Perfect

If you’re nervous about being in front of the camera, practice can help. You can take some test shots at home to get comfortable with posing and expressions. Alternatively, spend some time together on a casual date where you can practice being yourselves in front of the camera.

On the day of your engagement shoot, it’s sometimes nice to run through some of the typical moments during the wedding day as a ‘dress rehearsal’.. so you can practice “ walking down the aisle”, your first kiss or first dance with me so that you know what it looks like ahead of time. I find that lots of couples really appreciate doing this on an engagement shoot and helps them feel much more confident on their wedding day knowing that they are going to look fantastic!

Get the most out of your photos!

Once your engagement photos are ready, consider how you want to use them. Whether it’s for save-the-date cards, your wedding website, or as decoration at your wedding venue, make sure to showcase the beautiful memories you’ve created.

Final thoughts.

Your engagement shoot is a fun and relaxed opportunity to capture the excitement and love that precedes your wedding day. By planning ahead, choosing the right elements, and keeping making sure that we have a good time, you’ll ensure that your engagement photos will be cherished for years to come, along with your actual wedding photos. Enjoy the process, and remember, these moments are a celebration of your unique love story!
